The recent backlash among some about ARR's Chiggy Wiggy clip, and that too only a clip, has raised some questions for me. Many comments I'm hearing around the net lead me to question whether some of you think it's beneath ARR to compose simpler, massy, massala type numbers. I bet ARR had a lot of fun creating this song. If the director has asked ARR to compose a Bhangra/Western song with Kylie, how do you think he should compose it? Should there be alaaps, and taans and symphonic arrangements and jazz interludes and sufi style tablas and harmoniums? For those of you who are already panning Blue's music and movie due to a 1-2 minute clip, please enlighten us as to how you would compose such a track given the film's situation and what the director wants. I'm really curious. And if you have any great ideas, please feel free to pass on to ARR, who I'm sure would take you very seriously, since most of you don't have any knowledge of composing and have never composed for a film (sarcasm).
I will not have a problem if after hearing the whole song and giving it somewhat of a chance that you just don't like it, it doesn't make you feel good, it's just not your cup of tea. Fine with me! Nobody here should like EVERY ARR composition and there should be lots of room for different opinions! The issue I have is why is it "below ARR's standards" to compose such a number, if that's what is required for the situation and if ARR himself likes the song? According to your standards, should ARR never be allowed to compose a simple, massy, dance number? I'm also seeing comments on the net abound on how people find the clip's music to be catchy and that it sticks in their mind long after hearing it. Is that below ARR's standards to compose such a catchy tune? Is it wrong that ARR compose a tune that people find easy to listen, dance to, and hum to? And it goes both ways....maybe some of those people, who like the clip, may not like the whole song once they hear it. ARR himself is very flexible and open minded....ready to compose music in various genres, styles, moods, levels of complexity. However, I can't say that for some of his fans, who seem to have this snobbish attitude about what type of ARR's songs are acceptable under his name. Now, I'm not talking about not liking a song because it doesn't touch you or move you or for no reason at all except that you don't like it. THat's a different issue, which is subjective, and which I have no problem with. It's the overall attitude that concerns me. Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to be accusatory. I really want to have a serious discussion and debate about this in a civilized manner without name calling or bashing, please.
