"Such and such music is certainly not his best"

I've heard this statement over and over again in various reviews.  I think 
people think it's fashionable and self aggrandizing to make such statements, 
putting out the impression that they "know" a lot more about music that is 
really the case.  Of course, if they explain why they don't think it's his best 
with good reasoning, I have no problems.  But, just this statement alone does 
not pass muster with me.
