As expected, Couples Retreat dominated the box office Friday, pulling in an
estimated $12.3 million
for the day. The numbers portend good things to come this weekend for
this Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau-starring comedy. At this rate, the film
should gross in the high $20 million range for the three-day frame.
Sony Pictures’ Zombieland and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs took the number
two and three spot with Friday’s grosses at $4.7 million and $3.1 million
respectively.
The big surprise of the weekend was the activity from Paramount’s uniquely
marketed Paranormal Activity,
which grossed an estimated $2.5 million for the day. The number is
astonishing considering the R-rated horror film only played in 158
theaters, putting its per-screen average at an unbelievable $15,975.
(As a comparison, Couples Retreat per-screen number is
$4,110.) Also, now that over 1 million people from around the country
have logged onto the website ParanormalMovie.com to request it play in
their town, the film will open nationwide beginning Friday, Oct. 16.
Quite impressive for a film that cost only $11,000 to produce.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Disney’s Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3-D experiment which
garnered an additional $2 million for the day. Check back here tomorrow for the
weekend’s Top 5.
