So much so that there was a standing joke in his family that his first words were “Sa Re Ga Ma”. As he grew up, he proved to be a brilliant student as well. Like any other father who has ambitious dreams for his son, his father too wanted Sooraj to become something big in life. And in India, big obviously means the civil services. So IAS it was for Sooraj - his father’s unfulfilled dream job. *For a long time Sooraj was able to both get good grades at school and continue studying music, bringing him closer to his dream of being a professional musician. After a successful IAS exam, Sooraj receives a call from A R Rahman’s personal assistant, telling him that he, with a few other singers, has been selected to audition for a part in Rahman’s upcoming project. Sooraj was thrilled. It is not everyday that one gets a break with an Oscar-winning music director after all.* *But alas, his excitement was short lived. The day of the audition is the same day as his IAS interview, which cannot in any case be altered. The audition also cannot be rescheduled. Sooraj’s father is hell-bent on the fact that he wants him to complete the IAS interview and get a good job, and disapproves of a career in music. But at the same time, this might be the only chance that Sooraj has to become a successful musician, which is what he wants more than anything else.
