Do not worry friend. you and we have all right to call him sir. but the title 
Sir is awarded by British. I am not sure if this title is reserved only for a 
Britt origin and national. 

I suggest you could use "Padmashri A R Rahman" this is more patriotic as well. 
I dont think AR would be disappointed bcs Padmashri was awarded by the 
President of India
