AV Max March 2010 Music Reviews
A.R.Rahman Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa "AV Max recommended" 4/5 Lyrics: C Thamarai Label: Sony Music What's it about Love is in the air again. From the director who gave us Minnale in Tamil and Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein in Hindi (Vaaranam Aayiram to be more recent) comes yet another romantic venture titled Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. Translated as "will you come across the sky', Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is an apt title for the film that will keep hopeless romantics intrigued. Filmmaker Gautam Menon has teamed up with AR Rahman for the first time. Music >From the opening track itself, the seeds of love are sown. Seems like Rahman took his production team on a church visit, for, the harmonies have a divine feeling about them - church bells, chimes and choir like backing vocals on the first two tracks. And as he had remarked earlier, he has steered clear of charanams and pallavis in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. Rahman thrives purely on western melodies that transport you into an unreal world - one where you communicate your feelings via music alone. You see a remarkable bluesy track "Aaromale" which is easily the best off the list. The title track is a harmonic retreat. In Hosanna, the rap segment is beautifully interspersed, giving it a very contemporary touch. Sum Up For someone who has created a decade of good music, it is difficult to draw comparisons from his earlier work and raise the bar on every project. Besides a few tracks that sound repetitive, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa has some memorable moments dabbed with lovable lyrics that will draw you towards it like a well behaved typhoon. Recommended, for sure. Even for music buffs who don't understand a word of Tamil.
