Deepa Mehta sees Webber’s Bombay Dreams

The Indian director will bring Broadway musical Bombay Dreams to the big
screen with a score by AR Rahman.

Deepa Mehta will direct Beverly Hills-based Marquee Pictures’ first project,
an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical *Bombay Dreams* with
Oscar winner A R Rahman set to compose the score.

Sabrina Dhawan will adapt the musical, a Romeo And Juliet update set in the
high-stakes world of Bollywood that may be shot in 3D. Arclight Films is
handling sales here.

Marquee, set up by former Universal senior executive Jeff Segal, producer
Steve Waterman, Arclight managing director Gary Hamilton and Azure Media
Group chairman Steve Wilkinson, will partner with Lloyd Webber’s The Really
Useful Group.

Production will kick off in and around Mumbai in 2011 with an as yet unnamed
Indian partner.

“It was deeply rewarding for me to see A R Rahman’s work recognised in
America when he won two Oscars and I am thrilled to be working with him
again on this exciting project,” Lloyd Webber said.
