I also use DDE to print to custom Excel forms and to Word to print hand receipts for assets.

The dde.ini is in the User Tool help in a textual form. Just copy and paste into a Text formatted .ini file. Just search dde
If DDE does go away, Crystal Reports can output to Excel and several other formats. You just have to build a "flat" structure.
I personally don't see how DDE would ever go away though. There are several people which use ole, etc and surely this would never go away. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe if you support ole or visual basic, you get dde by default.

I use Remedy 5.1 and DDE to create an excel spreadsheet from a table and also use DDE in active links to transfer data from Remedy fields to book marks in a word document.

Hmmm, last I checked (few months back) DDE was not supported by Remedy.
When did this change?
The KB solution we use supplies the executable you are talking about. It is
installed on each clients machine.
