In my world, this has always been a question of process. IF you have established processes that cannot be altered, that must accomodate special circumstances NOT readily accomodated by out of the box solutions, then you should build.
IF however, your processes are a mess and you need to force everyone into a standard approach then out of the box is not a bad way to go. Personally, I have always found it best to design an app that forces 80% standardization and accomodates 20% "any way the end user wants to do it". Trying to 'customize" out of the box solutions into an 80/20 app always leads to trouble when the new release comes out. Define your processes then look at the cost of adapting to something different vs adopting something completely different vs building exactly what you need today while still keeping tomorrow in mind.
