Rolf, In the specific case you listed... I think I would avoid a button approach all together. Rather I would opt for a Table field with an HTML column. This way you show a list of items, with pictures for each and you can put the text in another column. (maybe HTML too if you need the text formatting stuff there as well.)
You could use Table Double click, or row select to trigger the workflow. (and disable the workflow on table refresh with the advanced settings of a Table field.) Or use a button above/below the table field to "use" the selected row.
