We may
have found our answer. I'll update after the fix is applied to be
certain.
Apparently, there's a documented issue with the 9i Oracle libraries on
HPUX (from the 6.3 release notes page 37) that our DBA/SA failed to read.

have 9.2.1 installed and need 9.2.4 patch 3 or greater. We're attempting
to get this patch and schedule the downtime.
