You are correct.  I think if you look into a UNIX manual you will find them.  I know that they worked on a Tandy Model I which came out in the late 1970's.  Don't know about an Apple II however.

The "reserved device words" are for BIOS Associated Devices... (CON, LPT, COMx ..)
