We're still running AR server 5.1 on HP-UX. We will upgrade our server
in 2007-Q1 to v6.3 .

Prior to this, we have recently upgraded our clients to version 6.3.
patch 18. Since we did this the server would sometimes error out and
give

ARERR [316] Failure with a temporary file : No such file or directory
and
ARERR [91] RPC call failed : RPC: Unable to receive; Asynchronous event occurred

And were not able to use the application anymore. Stopping and
restarting the AR server process arserverd solved this issue. In the
normal log files was no descriptive information.

This turned out to be because of the file descriptor limit was
reached. The number of file descriptors in use by the arserverd
process had grown by a factor 10(!!) since the deployment of the 6.3
user tools. Also, the number of file descriptors in use by arserverd
would only increase and never decrease.

Remedy Support told us something about the number of file descriptors
growing because of the new client and the 'handshake' taking longer.
They also stated something about a HP patch for file descriptor leaks
in the RPC layer, but could not specify which patch it would be.

Has anyone ran into this? Did you install a patch, which one?

Kind regards,

Michiel

Setup:
server HP -UX 11i, 5.1.2 no patch, oracle 8.1.7
clients: 6.3 patch 18.

PS Of course our unix admins have raised the number of allowed file
descriptors per process but this does not take away the cause. Also,
the number of open file descriptors still will not decrease. We
recycle the arserverd process during the night so it will not become a
problem anymore.
