However, if the UI needs are more dynamic than the server can deal
with the overhead of processing all "open" tickets every minute would
allow then there are other options. (Well, kind of.)

For example:

The admin could add a column to the table field and set it to be
"ReadOnly-HTML". Then walk the table data with an active link guide
and update the content of that single column to show a color or icon
to be a visual indicator to the user about the "to the second" (Well,
to the run time of the Active Link guide, of if you were really fancy
with enough javascript in the "HTML" you might be able to get the
color to change at a given time period too.) condition of the record.
If the developer was to give the user a "Refresh" button and a 'Last
evaluated' date/time field, maybe event add an Active Link that fires
on "Interval", and I bet you have a workable solution for minimal
effort.

If the Developer is using v7 then the whole Data Visualization Field
adds even more options too. (And, I will also add, a lot more work for
the developer.)

But whatever your end solution is I would suggest that you use more
than just a visual indicator to the condition your trying to signify.
Use text where possible for accessibility reasons.

You may also wish to look into the "Results Color Properties" ability of
tables:

"The Results Color tab enables you to set the colors for list view,
results list, and alert list table fields after a search (or refresh).
For example, you can color all New requests red and all Assigned
requests green."

It's on page 446 of the "Form and Application Objects" manual in AR
