Look in the ar.h file for symbol AR_CURRENT_API_VERSION.  

Briefly
  12 == 7.0
  11 == 6.3
  10 == 6.0
   9 == 5.12

At some point for previous versions, the symbol is not defined and other 
symbols are used.
