For outgoing mail you will need to configure Sendmail. Run a ps -elf | grep -i sendmail. This will search the process table to see if sendmail is running. If it is, you're good to go unless you need some site-specific tweaks for your organization. You may also check out the startup script by doing a grep sendmail /etc/rc*.*/*.
