The workflow on the form you are searching may have active links that fire
on Return/Menu choice on your drop-down field, setting data in other hidden
fields. For example, if it were a Name field, workflow might set the
Request ID of the contact record to a hidden field. In your case there may
be similar fields related to the Organization/Company that are being set by
workflow. Additionally, there may be workflow firing on Window Loaded/Open
that is setting values to other fields.
This sort of workflow makes perfect sense when creating new tickets
($OPERATION$ = "CREATE") as it is filling in data needed to complete your
ticket, but in a search situation it may mean that the query being submitted
is not what you expect. If this is the case, you may be able to see this by
looking at the Recent Searches menu on the form, or by using active link
logging to see if any fields are being set by workflow.
If you do have this sort of workflow setting data to fields, once you have
identified the active links concerned from the logs, you can change the
run-if qualification to overcome the problem. Adding the qualification AND
$OPERATION$ != "QUERY" to the run-if will stop the workflow running when the
form is opened in search mode, but it will still run when the form is opened
in New ("CREATE") or Modify ("SET") modes.

I am still a beginner so not sure why you want me to add that qualification.
Is there a specific reason to do so? What would I achieve by doing so? Don't
get me wrong here, I am not questioning your logic, just trying to better
understand what you meant.
