Adding to what Shawn said, I have noticed in recent times with a couple of projects that I worked on, managements like products like AlarmPoint. They felt that is money well spent.. I must admit that it does have some cool communication features for ARS.. I know its compatible with 6.3 but not sure if it has hooks for 7 as yet just in case you guys are looking to upgrade anytime too soon...
Management also likes accountability, so if you can work on your SLA module and be creative around it to pick on some of your key business areas putting them heavily under the SLA hammer, I think they might like that.. They will not be all that impressed if you are able to do something that makes the CMDB return results three times faster. What impresses them are things relating to notifications, reporting, and integrating with other products that they use. It sounds like your email ideas fit in with that. One that I have on my list for 2008 projects is email based approvals, specifically from the blackberry. The approvers should not have to log in to the application, but rather get an email with a description of the Change Request that they can respond to with things like "Approve".
