I guess you'll have to try L.J.s solution then.  

If it's something where you just no longer have a need for the time
information, you can set the field to display time only and strip the
time out when writing workflow, but that would probably be just as much
work as replacing the field.  

$DATE$     For Date/Time fields, the current date (time defaults to
midnight). Anything stored in a date/time field is stored as the number
of seconds since UNIX epoch time, which includes the date and time.
