Hi Claire, I have used a product called Genius Connect http://www.geniusconnect.com/ to do a 2 way sync of not only calendar appointments, but tasks and contacts as well. We use the multi user version with multiple mail boxes syncing on a single PC running Genius Connect within Outlook 2003. Doing a 2 way sync may seem relatively straight forward but was a fair bit more complex than you might think. In your case though, with just the calendars to sync it shouldn't be too bad.
I think MS Exchange is a difficult beast to integrate with but I really like the way it can be done with Genius Connect. There are numerous advantages to using a server based approach as opposed to using OLE and DDE on a client. Genius even has a built in conversion for our epoch date conversions.
