Yes...it's generally called RFID. And you're right--it is cool. In my
mind, in a large enterprise, it's the only way automating the discovery
and tracking of actual assets can be done practically.

In a smaller organization, yeah--get a report from your autodiscovery
tool that reports deltas and then walk around and check to make sure all
your stuff is where it's supposed to be. But in an enormous
enterprise--say DoD--that involves tremendous overhead.

Re your comment: "Now I would think a user would report that there
system is missing or we would hope so." YOU WOULD BE SHOCKED AT HOW
UNTRUE THIS IS!

I'm thinking SMS by itself used for this purpose is borderline
worthless. Anyone care to comment?

We use LANDesk at our location and I have all the systems setup to check
in every 15 days and when it get inventoried at that time it sends the
data to Remedy, now we could have a monthly report showing what systems
didn't check in after a number of days so it could be followed up with.
Now I would think a user would report that there system is missing or we
would hope so.
I did get a demo of a lojack type of software a while back that would
track down missing assets now that was cool.

Or I think you can just throw all of the discovered data (from one or
more sources) at your CMDB and use the heck out of the Reconciliation
Engine to detect "missing" stuff. Yes this is a brute force technique,
but when you have no money to spend... you do the ugly stuff
sometimes.
