Dev, And I would add... that I think _most_ testing could be done from v7 with Active Link guides and dynamic workflow. A collection of "advanced" actions (Window Open, Send Events, "PERFORM-ACTION-ACTIVE-LINK" and "Application-Copy-Field-Value" to name a few) built into a data configurable application should be able to "remotely" (not directly attached to the application that it is testing) test any application built in ARS. (However, at this time I think it might require some set of common tools to be attached to the target forms, but that should be a shared set of workflow. And I think that could be avoided if BMC did just a few more advanced things with their client workflow.)
And I think it would be a wise path for BMC to finish any and all client side actions to be totally determined at run time to allow a generic test harness to be fully implementable by BMC and used by their customers. To avoid the need/desire to buy someone else software for testing/design purposes. They have made a good deal of progress down this path (and likely for other reasons) but there are just a few more things to do. :) Also I think you will find that the client automation path has some serious limitations in it. There are almost no good ways to send keys to a field like "Return", or a good way to "press a button on a form". ( You know the stuff that makes ARS so powerful.) I believe these were intentionally left out of the OLE frame work so that programmers could not open the user tool (hidden) in the background and "talk to ARS for the user of their applications". We tried using Test Partner but couldn't get any maintainable scripts using Remedy User. Some things such as menu selection and button clicks are just too hard to script if you need them to trigger workflow. We settled on using Mid Tier with Test Partner and it works okay but its not a simple record/playback sort of thing. I've heard SilkTest is a very good tool but I've never used it. I believe BMC uses it internally for some of their own regression testing.
