We have something like that.
When a user submits a report to be processed, we have a read-only (modal) dialog which appears. Using active links that run on refresh, we update a series of flat buttons to give the appearance of a "progress bar" which moves back and forth. These active links also check the status of a background form, which the external process is responsible for updating. When the background form has been updated by the external process, the dialog closes. Make sense? I guess it all boils down to more details. What results are you waiting for? How are these results being processed? How is Remedy instructed that the processing is completed?
