It depends on your needs and your available hardware. I'd suggest separate servers for performance purposes, but the installation/configuration is more complicated. If you happen to have a beefy server and BO will be mostly support for your midtier, then one server may make more sense.
My configuration is a linux server running tomcat/apache for midtier and BO version 11 on a win platform running IIS. The documentation may be better now (haven't checked) but when I was configuring it was very confusing. I'd suggest reading through the configuration instruction and highlight the instructions that applies to your enviroment. One gotcha I remember was that if BO was not installed on the C drive (like in my environment) then you'll have problems as midtier was looking for BO files in a specific location. Current version/patches may make this a non issue. I'd suggest installing and posting specific problems as you encounter them as the problems that afflicted my configuration may no longer exist. You're on your own with regards to licensing. My BOXI server was already in place and all I had to do was configure midtier to work with it. I am interested in any configuration/installation tips and tricks apart from those described in the documentation. Any opinion on whether to run the BO server on the same server or on a separate machine? Also, I was wondering what is the licensing approach for the BO server. Does Remedy need just a single user license on the BO server in order to run and display built in reports? Or would that be a breach of licensing rules from Business Objects licensing point of view?
