I'm surprised so much misconception about Microsoft products still
exists. Microsoft is crushing the competition.

> Apache is more widely used than IIS.

True for the moment, but industry analysts expect Microsoft to finally
overtake Apache in 2008. In June 2005, Apache owned 69.7% of the market
share; today it owns 48.4%. While Apache was losing ground, MS was
gaining. Read for yourself:

I think this depends on who you ask. As far as market share goes,
however, Microsoft is the leader. MS owns 41% of the market; Oracle
owns 29%:

Yes it is. And it's expected to own 70% of the market share in 2010:

Granted, 70% is expected to be its high point, but still, that's pretty
impressive.

should be Microsoft's bread and butter.

Actually, people aren't necessarily wary of Vista--they're just happy
with an existing Microsoft product, WINDOWS XP! I own both. I have
Vista on a laptop and XP on a desktop. I couldn't care less which one I
use. See here:

So in a nutshell, if a middling software vendor like BMC tries to
compete with Microsoft's 800 pound gorilla, my money's on the gorilla.

P.S.: I also find it funny that way back in the late 1990s and early
2000s industry "experts" predicted that open source would be the undoing
of Microsoft. Whatever became of that? Linux can't even put a dent in
Microsoft's desktop dominance even by giving their product away for
FREE!

Suite? No logging doesn't count.

Microsoft does practically own the O/S market, the spreadsheet/word
processor market, and a few others, but they primarily do best when it
comes to desktop related applications.

Apache is more widely used than IIS. Oracle is a more respected product
than SQL Server. Exchange usage is growing, but I doubt it's the leader
in email.

The problem is that Microsoft's core business is the desktop arena.
When you get to the server side, there's a lot of competition and there
always has been.

Additionally, you'll notice that sales of Vista have not been anywhere
near as high as sales of Windows 95 or XP. People are wary of what
should be Microsoft's bread and butter.

Also, I agree with you in theory that it should be easier, but I
seriously doubt Microsoft will let you customize their product as well
as Remedy allows. Granted, with so many organizations demanding
everything be OOtB this is not a huge benefit anymore, but some places
will still count on it.

There are also some pretty huge clients of BMC that are using ITSM that
will keep it afloat. Some of the large implementations are things that
would take years and years to implement. They won't be scrapped easily.
