If you can spare the time and money to develop something for a few years - why 
not.. But I can guarantee you it will be a looonnnnnngggggg term project even 
if you are aiming at having 25% of the functionality that the OTB product has - 
if building a CMDB is what you are really looking at.

Starting with building an Asset Inventory module and moving up to Asset 
Management might be a good starting point.. It might be a pretty interesting 
project.

BTW, I am currently available for short/long term projects if anyone has 
anything. I'm more interested in custom development over working with the OTB 
products.
