If you were on Solaris, I would say "use the libumem memory allocator", but I 
don't know of an equivalent for Linux.  libumem is nice because it makes it 
very easy to track down what corrupts the stack, as it forces a core dump and 
exits on a bad operation, from which you can get a stack trace.  You
can even step through the operations if you can reproduce the problem, viewing 
the data and function calls using mdb (or was it dbx).
