Even if its a Display Only field, I'm pretty sure you do require to have write permissions or 'Allow any user to Submit' ticked if you are using those display only fields during the save operation to push information from them to elsewhere in either the filter processing actions or after submit active link actions..
It does sound odd that it requires that considering that the fields that you are actually storing the information has the necessary permissions (which I'm assuming you do) after pushing it from these display only fields..
