Having 20K concurrent users sending requests almost simultaneously is different
from having a total of 20K users using the system sporadically..
My guess in a heavily used environment, concurrent users would amount to
between 50 to 60% of the total user strenght.. mild to light usage environments
the concurrent users may vary anywhere between 20 to 30% of the total user
strenght..
With 4 GB of RAM if you have no complaints with 20K users, not more than 100 to
200 requests might be hitting the server concurrently..

Hmmmm...we are running a Midtier in one environment with 20,000+ users
on one box...no load balancer.  It's a dual processor with 4GB of
RAM...and we have outstanding performance.  Zero complaints.

Joe,

If only that were the case. This has been thrown together with borrowed
equipment some of which is actually running other processes besides the
Mid Tier. The boxes are not on a load balancer although I tired. I have
no idea how much memory is on any of the boxes. The one good thing is
that at most we can only have 950 concurrent users as we are limited to
that number of licenses. My guess is we would have no more then 600
concurrent connections.

Thanks for the information.

This really would depend on the size of your box. I am assuming with 7K
users you have your mid-tier setup in a load balanced environment, if
not that better be one monstor you have installed your mid-tier on..

I have heard in the past somewhere that its good to allocate upto about
4 MB of memory per expected concurrent user so with 7K users if about
60% of them should be using it concurrently, you are looking at a region
of 16 GB upwards of total memory (all 3 boxes combined).. With memory as
'cheap' as it can go these days, I would even try to go all the way and
consider all the 7K users as concurrent and build your environment so
you are not short changed on memory when you actually have your users
use the web..

8 GB per machine would sound like a reasonable number..

Your max number of connection per server could be adjusted accordingly..

Hello All,

ARS 7.0.1 patch2

Mid Tier 7.1 patch2

Mid Tier 7.0.1 patch2

WIN 2003

SQL 2K

This is a training/stage environment. It is the first time we are
delving into any extensive use of the Mid Tier. That being said we will
be conducting training for the next month. We have a total of 7k users
to train.

We have a total of 3 mid tier boxes. Two are 7.1 and one is 7.0.1. My
question revolves around the setting for Maximum Connections per Server
in the config tool. Has anyone determined a good number for this
setting?

Thanks,
