If you haven't done any customization to OOTB status field, say if you
haven't added any new permission to it or change the permission . Field
has got public (view) permission and general access ( change) permission
.

So a user who has got General Access in his group list on the user form
will be able to update status field, go to the user form for the user
and check if he has got General Access permission.

For some reason when you create a user account and grant him any
application permission , general access permission which is supposed to
get set automatically doesn't seems to happen, this is observed in 7

On the people form, lookup the support user. If you only have 1 company
and no plan to add others, you can check the box that says Unrestricted
Access. If you leave that box unchecked, you have to put an entry into
the table above for access restrictions. That table points to the
CTM:People Permission Groups form. 

If that doesn't help, try re-adding the permissions :)
