If you haven't done any customization to OOTB status field, say if you haven't added any new permission to it or change the permission . Field has got public (view) permission and general access ( change) permission .
So a user who has got General Access in his group list on the user form will be able to update status field, go to the user form for the user and check if he has got General Access permission. If you only have 1 company and no plan to add others, you can check the box that says Unrestricted Access. If you leave that box unchecked, you have to put an entry into the table above for access restrictions. That table points to the CTM:People Permission Groups form.
