No, use of the portmapper is optional. However, if you do NOT specify a port with TCD-Specific-Port then you must use the portmapper. In this case the portmapper will get a port assigned by the OS. If you do specify a port you MAY also choose to use the portmapper. In this case the server registers the port with the portmapper so that clients that do not know the port can find the server. If you're running multiple servers on the same system (I have test servers with mutliple versions from 4.5.2 thru 7.5 running) I'd recommend you consider not using the portmapper - this way you have to specify a port when connecting, which may make it less likely you'll get connected to the wrong one by mistake....
