I was just about to suggest the same thing. If for whatever reasons you do not want to use flash-boards, and if the reports that you need are purely numbers, how about direct queries to the database that returns the figures to the screen? Have an AL to refresh these figures using those queries every 5 minutes or so. You will need to write good queries however to minimize a performance hit..
