Depends if you put the startup script in your rc directory to have it
execute on startup or if you are manually running the ./startup.sh

Does it run all the time or is it started when needed?

It should appear as a "java" process.

I run the startup.sh script and get this:

Using CATALINA_BASE: /remedy/apache-tomcat-5.5.25
Using CATALINA_HOME: /remedy/apache-tomcat-5.5.25
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /remedy/apache-tomcat-5.5.25/temp
Using JRE_HOME: /usr/java

When I do a ps -ef I don't see any additional processes.

Thanks!
