Jerry,
Just an additional thought here but it's worth mentioning as a similar
situation once happened to me. Our mail engine also stopped processing
and I had gone through some of the same steps you have gone through as
well as what Anne had mentioned. One thing I overlooked though was the
sent items folder in the actual mail client. My problem was a result of
someone attempting to send a 36M attachment out from within our Help
Desk app which caused the mail engine to die. Once I had our exchange
guys to delete the offending mail, I restarted the mail engine and
things were fine again.

 Hi Anne,
   Thanks lot for your reply.
I thought about that, and I already removed all the emails from the
incoming mail box the email engine is pulling and moving some very small
size of emails in, restart the email engine, but still got the same
error message. Is there anything else I need to check or clear?

I'm not sure if that's the same error, but my incoming just stopped
functioning one day (with outgoing working fine) when it was trying to
process a message with a big attachment. That one was 30M. Ours has
handled 10M properly. I'm not sure where the limit might be. That
might be something for you to check.

 Hi,
Our email engine failed to process incoming emails two days ago, but
still works fine with outgoing emails, and we have the following error
messages, could some one have any idea about this problem and any
solutions?
we are in version 7.1 patch 3, window/sql platform

Thanks lot!

Subject: Re: Advanced Search

Hi,

I would guess that "%[_]%" should work.

If you are doing a database search (as opposed to ACTL/FLTR run-if),
this may have to do with your database. It seems to work on MS-SQL, but
not on Oracle...
