I agree with the others, do research and get training. Time spent learning up front will save you tons of hours later.

to answer some of your specific questions -

The CMDB is a repository of your CIs and the relationships between them. It holds the key information about each CI.

You can create CIs by multiple methods -
*Integration with Discovery tools (the best and most dynamic method for accuracy)
*Manual input from the Asset Management Application
*Manual input from the CMDB Console

BMC CMDB doesn't just "link" with BMC Asset Management. Many of the forms in Asset Management are actually join forms with the forms/classes in CMDB. For example. If you enter a CI in BMC_ComputerSystem class of the CMDB it is visible in the Asset Application Computer System table. All because of DB joins. It is not two records, but one. The reason for the join is Asset adds additional fields/attributes that are Asset specific such as financial information.

Asset Management is needed to extend CMDB with Financial and Contractual information. Additionally, it provides views for the business user/manager of assets. The CMDB  views are meant more as administrative, machine driven views.

I hope that helps. I highly recommend you take formal BMC training classes on this subject. For a jump start at a cheaper overall price, consider attending WWRUG next month. There are great tutorials and sessions that will give you the foundation you need - http://www.wwrug.org/WWRUG09.html

Hi List,

Can some one suggest me from where should i start learning cmdb.

Also please let me know what is the use of cmdb?
How do we create CI in it?
How does it link to Asset Management.
Do we require to create CI in both CMDB as well as Asset Management.
Then what is the use of Asset Management?

Regards,
Salma
