You probably need to install the 32-bit version of the X11 client libraries. You would only need an X server running on the Linux box if you are logged directly into the server. If you are logged in from a remote host with an X server running on the remote host (e.g., your PC), then you don't need an X server running on the Linux box - you just need the appropriate X11 client libraries. Since Java is a 32-bit application, it will need the 32-bit version of the X11 client libraries to run.
