In a Filter I don't think it really matters. In an Active Link it depends on what you want to see if you have multiple values returned and want a list. Using the View form will bring up the search results fields for that form while an SQL will bring back the SQL you specified. If you have different requirements on fields to see in the pick list window I would use SQL (i.e. In one place you need fields a,b,c and in another you need fields a,d,e). Other than that I use the standard set fields.
