Well....you could as you suggested use OLE/DDE to generate the file....this process would require storing the template on the server, getting it to the client machine, edit/save the file....you could then save that file to an attachment field on the form, then kick off a notification via filter....or create a record in the ar system email messages form with that attachment....but this would require allot of work client side for something that the client doing the work doesn't actually care about...
