I have been out of the Remedy/ARS game for about a year now so I won't
speak directly to that but I have been active in virtualization (VMware
specifically) so I will comment on that aspect of the question. As long
as the back-end storage is configured to support sufficient I/O (i.e.
sufficient number of drives in the RAID group) I don't see why a
virtualized solution would run into any issues. I know with VMware you
can "reserve" server CPU/RAM resources for a given VM so there should
not be any issues there either.

Will you take a performance hit compared to a dedicated physical box?
Perhaps, but if the implementation is sized and configured properly I
doubt it would be noticeable. If you've got the funds to blow, putting
the DB storage on its own dedicated 5-6 SSD disk fibre-channel or iSCSI
storage array should provide plenty of disk I/O and the host server can
handle CPU/Mem resourcing.

Viability of virtualization for an application like this all comes down
to knowing the size of your organization and being able to model the
server load.

Virtualization?

Drew,
I can't talk directly regarding the problems BMC was talking
about....but
just from my own understanding, SQL Server is a very 'heavy'
application...it requires lots of RAM and lots of CPU, typically
virtualization would make an OS share those resources, which isn't
'best'
for this type of application...any time you want something from a DB,
you
want it as fast as possible....won't be as good in virtual as it would
with
Physical...

Subject: MSSQL Virtualization?

Hello all,

While helping use architect a new Remedy system, BMC suggested to NOT
virtualize the MSSQL server, without giving any reasons except that
there
were "problems."

Could I get some insight please? I would like to virtualize AR Server
7.1
and eventually 7.6 ITSM on a virtualized MSSQL server. What issues
should
I expect?

Thank you in advance.
