Sorry.  That's what the Import Tool does.  It's not complicated.  Just tedious 
and manual, hence, error prone, but certainly doable.

With Meta-Update, it's trivial to automate:

Query = Src, SrcSchema, SrcQry
Update = Tgt, TgtSchema, UpdQuery
Assign = asg
AssignNew = asgNew
Merge = Yes, NoWokflow

[asgNew]
.. more assignment to make a new record if desired..
[asg]
NewDiary = OldDiary

Yes and No....depends on what you are talking about....if you just do a plain 
set/push field, that'll copy the entire contents if done from a Filter...if 
done from an AL it'll copy the current contents....but either way you will be 
creating a 'new' entry in the new diary field.  If you want to copy from diary 
A to diary B without creating a new entry, but to just make a complete copy, 
you would need to do a 'mergeEntry' at the API level...a bit more complicated.
