Rich, Apache is arguably the most widely used web server in the world, and does a great job of load balancing. I've done a lot of work for investment banks that can only be described as "very corporate", and Apache has been a key component in their infrastructure.
The problem with Apache and Midtier is mod_jk. I wrote an article on this last week.
