Yes, the Subject line is redundant since it must be for you to read this, 

thought I would get that in before you all start teasing me about it.

It turns out the problem was a loose network cable.

 

So it intermittently worked fine, then not, caused the other server to crash

and was difficult to diagnose. Event logs filled with messages pointing to
other issues

on two servers. 

 

Then the cable completely lost connection, the systems cleared out what they
had

And the issue became clearer. Still thought it was a dying network card, and
that is what

the system reported.

 

There is now monitoring in place to detect if the cable comes loose again
(don't ask me,

I am 1.5 miles from the servers and haven't seen them in three years).

 

I am working on a temporary home while the servers get replaced

(a loose cable, time to replace the servers? Actually because they are over
6 years old).
