Have you tried exporting to normal def and replacing it instead of xml def?

Exporting the form as a def and replacing the character, re-importing, causes –to appear in numerous form and object history entries. This form has since beeen updated by a number of developers, along with form history. Has anyone run into this before or have any ideas on how this can be fixed without having to reapply all the development & history changes?
