To help speed this process up when running the installer, we used the silent
installation process and let options text file populate the values, still slow
as molasses on a cold winter morning, but closer to being bearable. Take a
look at appendix B of the install guide for more info.

Subject: Re: Running Installer for 7.6.04

** Xming is a free X Windows server you can run on your workstation. Install
that and add the server's IP address to the X0.hosts file. My X0.hosts is
located at C:\Program Files\Xming\X0.hosts.

Once you've done this, start Xming.

On the unix server, set up the display export:

export DISPLAY=<workstation IP>:0.0

Then run the installation program on the server and it will show on your
desktop.

Just a note, if you are not close to the server the X application is nearly
unusable. Running X apps over VPN, on the other side of the globe, etc. will
render the installer mostly useless. It will take 10 to 100 times as long to
do the installation from far away than it will if the server is close by. The
worst I've seen is running it on a server in the US from India, in which case I
had to wait 10-15 minutes each time I clicked on a field in the installer to
wait for it to actually set focus to the field to input information. Needless
to say I found another location (workstation closer to the server) to run the
installer from.

Hello Fellow Listers,

Please forgive me for asking such a simple question but as I am reading through
the install guide for 7.6.04 it talks about running X Windows Client when doing
the install.

We are coming from version 7.1 and we have never encountered a need to run X
Windows Clients before with installing the AR Server. What do we need to know
to run this installer?

The Install Guide is so vague that I am lost trying to find out what we need,
what setting we need, etc. For example, it says to set the DISPLAY environment
variable to point to the X Windows Client on the local computer.

I am guessing this is something like

$ export DISPLAY=mymachine:0.0

Hut my question is will this work or do I need to point to the exact directory
where X Windows Client would be installed on my windows desktop?

Current Environment

Client Desktop: Windows 7
Server OS: Sun OS 5.9
AR Server: 7.1 patch 11 - upgrading to 7.6.04 patch 2
DB: Oracle 10g.

Any input would be very helpful. Any links, white papers, discussions group
links will be very helpful. Like I said no one on our team has ever run into
the X Windows Client before and the Install Guide is NO HELP.
