Depends on what Unix? A database running on Solaris (SPARC Processor) will not be able to just be copied to Windows.
Check out Endian encoding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endianness When we moved from Solaris (on SPARC) over to Linux (on Intel) the DBA's had to copy the data using the datapump process of Oracle.
