If the field is a Date/Time field I would think that the web service would expect it to be in a valid XML Date/Time format. The XML Date/Time format is YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss.0000-05:00 (http://www.w3schools.com/schema/schema_dtypes_date.asp)
