Another route could be to layer two fields on top of each other, one being a date field that stores the value and has no calendar button, the other being a calendar field with no data visible but with a calendar button. The no-calendar button is read only so they can't click on it, and since only the calendar part is visible on the calendar field with the button, clicking the button should be captured via an On Focus action within an active link. Then a part of the active link (or guide if necessary) is to set the read only date field with the date that is selected from the field with the calendar.
