If we set another field equal to this statement (minus the EXTERNAL Keyword and
with some additional syntax changes) can we use a setfield command to move it
into a field of it's own (say fieldZ) and then use the EXTERNAL (fieldZ). Or
am I missing something?

That would mean EXTERNAL within EXTERNAL, and I do not think that is allowed.
Also, you seem to have a problem with it, as there is no left hand
parenthesis after the EXTERNAL keyword, and the "-characters does not have
the right count. A double-" will be a literal ", but all single-" will be
the beginning/end of a string.
So where exactly did you grab the string you posted? From DevStudio
looking at a table-qualification, or did you cut/paste from different
places?
