Yes there is a menu attached to the field but I need to restrict users to type any value doesn't exist in the menu values. Another possibility is there is an active link changing the menu. In order to attach a menu to a field there must be an original menu on the field. The $MENU$ pattern is applies against that original menu only, and will fail if the menu is changed. I know it worked that way in 6.3 and would be surprised if it is not the same in 7.6.
