It sounds like the date format in your character field does not match the format of your date field. Your third party app is using mm/dd/yyyy and your ARS system is using dd/mm/yyyy
Misi's set fields should take care of the issue, although you probably should make sure all systems agree on the same definition of fields when integrating applications.
